Elective Courses and LAB Options


FRIDAY is the day for ELECTIVES!!!!!!!

WE NEED YOU PARENTS

ELECTIVES and LABS will be taught on Fridays in 90 minute blocks.

ELECTIVES and LABS will start Friday, October 5th.


Each student in grades 6th through 9th is required to take ONE Elective Course each semester.

For the first semester (20 weeks) we will be offering the following elective courses.

  • Dance Technique 1 (Myshia Moten)

  • Dance Technique 2 (Myshia Moten)

  • Drama 2 (Tom Hyatt)

  • Intro to Drama (Tom Hyatt)

  • Visual Art (Doug Maxwell/Lori Koop)

  • CULINARY ARTS (Lowell Bernstein) – This is a mandatory course. Students will attend a Culinary Arts 90 minute block on a two week rotation.


COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


Visual Arts Block #2, 10:45am-12:15pm B-1

This course will explore two and three dimensional art making, guided by artists through history. Various techniques and materials will be explored. We will share new discoveries and happy mistakes as each individual explores his/her own creative self. Visual arts standards will be addressed.


Drama 1 Block #3, 1:15pm-2:45pm B-1

Interested in Theatre Arts but never tried? Please join us for Aveson's first ever Theatre Arts I class! We will be exploring the world of theater through the history of theater, improvisation games and exercises, scene study, monologue work, stage craft, and voice for the stage. All levels welcome. We will end the class at with a final presentation at the end of the semester.


Drama 2 Block #2, 10:45am-12:15pm Auditorium

A creative, developmental drama program. This course will seek to teach students the inter-connectedness inherent in theater arts. We will explore all areas of theatre arts including acting, movement, voice, playwriting, technical theatre and directing. The purpose of this or any drama program is for participants to develop speaking skills, acting skills, creative thinking, confidence and self esteem.


Foreign Language Lab Block #1 9:15am-10:45am Auditorium

This course is designed for students with no previous Spanish. Activities are designed to accommodate the early stages of language acquisition; and grammatical structures. Emphasizes communication skills: the ability to comprehend native speakers of Spanish, to speak Spanish with them, to understand Spanish-language texts, and to communicate ideas in Spanish.

Dance Technique 1 Block #1, 9:15am-10:45am Auditorium

This is a beginning dance course for students who have had little to no previous dance training or experience. It will be a standards-based course that will focus on the development of the students general body awareness and alignment. Students will also engage in improvisation techniques as well as learn a minimal amount of choreography skills.

Dunham technique, (a codefied modern dance technique), will be the basis of instruction for this course.To learn more about the Dunham Technique, google Ms. Katherine Dunham.

Viewing Dance: T.B.D.
This standards-based course will focus on analyzing dance from a modern and historical perspective. The basis of this course will be video presentations, however some live viewings will be required. Written and verbal criticisms of dance will be an integral part of this course. Students will view abroad range of dance styles, from dance in the English courts, to Krump dancing in South Central Los Angeles.


Dance 2 Block #3, 1:15pm-2:45pm Auditorium

This intermediate to advance level of technique is for students with 2+ years of previous dance training. It will be a standards-based course that will focus on advanced skills such as balance, equilibrium, strength, speed, and choreography. Performing will be required, as well as additional hours before or after school as needed.

Math Lab Block #2, 10:45am-12:15pm A-1

If your numbers just aren't adding up, or you just need some guidance on math project ideas,then Math Lab is for you. Math Lab is a place where you can sign-up for small group instruction, assistance with project ideas, or for enrichment activities including logic games and puzzles. Sudoku anyone?


Literacy Lab Block #1, 9:15am-10:45am B-1

A literature lab for everyone! If you love literature, words, grammar, vocabulary and just can't get enough.... or you need help formating your essay. Contains lessons, harmonizes text with reading assignments, provides reading lists, as well as discussion questions and activities. Integrates writing for all levels.


Science Lab Block #3, 1:15am-2:45pm Lab

Love science and want to do more?? Or would you just like to understand it better?? Learn how to design and plan your own science projects! This block will aid both students needing assistance in science and those wishing to do more advanced science based independent projects with an emphasis on effective experiment design.

CULINARY ARTS/Healthy Living

Lowell Bernstein will be working with each advisory on the Healthy Living/Culinary Arts component, which will focus on the school-wide theme of what it takes to build a successful community. Personal and public health education issues will be addressed by both Lowell and Myshia Moten (Fitness Advisor), through regular visits to advisories, culinary arts and physical education activities, and leading discussions around health-related topics focusing on mental, physical, and emotional well-being.


Lowell’s culinary arts classes and integration of gardening activities will be scheduled during project time and developed in collaboration with project teachers on all grade levels to ensure cohesiveness and validity for seamless integration with the broader educational experiences, activities and projects in which students participate.

For grades 6-9 Mr. Bernstein will offer Culinary Arts to 16 students during Blocks 1, 2, or 3 on a two week rotation. (Your advisor will let you know which time you have been signed up for)




FITNESS

Myshia Moten is your Fitness Advisor. She will be developing a Personal Fitness Plan with each and every one of you!

Fitness instruction is offered on a rotating schedule, starting with two 45 minute assigned blocks and culminating with a “Fitness Week” every four weeks that will involve the entire school in a multitude of fitness activities.

Myshia, through her collaboration with Lowell Bernstein, our Culinary Arts guru and one of our founding members will create healthy living and fitness experiences that connect to the Culinary Arts activities and explicitly support and demonstrate the social healthy mind-body connection.

CELEBRATION of LEARNING

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

Every ten weeks students, teachers, staff, parents and community members will gather to celebrate YOUR learning!

It's two nights to present and reflect on the work YOU have done for that ten-week block.

A true celebration will have food, drink, music, and lively discussion!

Exemplary student projects will be on display for parents and community members to enjoy.

During the celebration of learning, food and drink samples will be provided and presented through the efforts of the Aveson Healthy Living and Culinary Arts Center. All of the samples provided during the event will be examples of recipes and healthy living activities and projects that the students have created throughout the 10-week period of the first school-wide project.

This is our night! We will plan it, create it, advertise it, present, set up, clean up, and more!!

At the end of every ten weeks students will participate in a Student–Led Conference.

During the S.L.C. students will be able to present to their parents their Personal Learning Plan, as well as all the projects and activities they have created, completed or have been working on for that ten week block.

Students will share their S.M.A.R.T. goals with their parents, as well.
